And It's One, Two, Three Strikes You're Out . . .

We had a wonderful time on our first full day in Arizona today!  We started with a visit to the Brass Armadillo, an antique mall in Goodyear.  I've been in these before but never one as big as this one and, not surprisingly, the only purchase was a larimar ring that Cheryl saw in the very first cabinet upon entering the store.  And, as she taught me, larimar comes from only once place on the planet - the Dominican Republic where she did missionary work on two trips in 2011 and 2012.

It is a beautiful ring . . . just like her as was confirmed later. We headed for the ballpark about noon and the attendant who took our tickets (from my cell phone) told me "She's beautiful" as they were checking her bag for contraband.  My response was "Both inside and out" so we're off to a good start.

This is the last week of spring training as the season opens next week.  The gift shop was, accordingly, a bit bereft of treasures but we still managed to spend some retirement money on t-shirts for me.  Next was lunch and we got in line for the famous taquito - a 12-inch hot dog stuffed into a flour tortilla with cheese, then deep-fried and adorned with queso, guacamole, and pico de gallo.  As regrettably is too often the case, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs but they were surely as good a hot dog as I've ever eaten.

Not expecting a ton from the Reds, I was pleasantly surprised when they scored first.  I was downright shocked when, in the fourth inning, they scored 8 more times, and ended up winning 10-0.  As I said in an earlier post, if they finish .500 for the season I'll be thrilled. If they play like they did today consistently, they're likely to do far better than .500.  When the record starts at 0-0, hope springs eternal.

Off to see my cousin Marian and her husband Mark in Scottsdale tomorrow.  We're really looking forward to this as she's blood, and we know it is pretty darned thick.  Her father, Edward, was one of my mom's favorite siblings, and her mother, Gloria, holds a special place in Cheryl's heart from a visit with my mom and her sister, Ann, to see Uncle Edward in El Paso in 1994.  They were the last 3 surviving siblings (of 11) at that time, so tomorrow is special.  More to come after that experience.

  1. Gosh!!! I feel like I'm on vacation just reading this! So happy you two are settling right in. I'm thrilled that a member of my Mahfood family is here in Arizona--and I'm truly touched by the kind things you wrote about my folks.
